We’re on the same side about the withdrawal, but I think it’s disingenuous to say war hawks didn’t know it would be a forever war. Not accepting the Taliban’s original surrender, designing the Afghan military to rely on American air support, expanding the war into Iraq, all of these aren’t mistakes, they’re policy decisions designed to extend the war and guarantee taxpayer money gets funneled into the military industrial complex. From the perspective of those companies, Afghanistan was a 20 year gravy train, and we need to acknowledge that so it’s easier to recognize when they start looking around for the next war.
